Retrospective template — Bring your topic to the table

This template was inspired by Airmeet. Airmeet is a platform for virtual summits, meetups & workshops with a social lounge to deliver a rich networking experience.

During one of my meetups, I used the platform and I was impressed with the user experience. There are virtual tables on Airmeet, and you can select a seat at one. Thus, we may still provide the user with the virtual sensation of sitting at a table. This experience stayed with me for a long time. A few years later, when I was thinking about ideas for a Retrospective, it sparked a thought. Why don’t I use the concept of virtual table? Let the participants create their own avatars, and let them select a seat at the table and thus the Round Table Retrospective came to life.

Introduction: Start by asking the participants to create avatars for themselves. Give them some time to design their avatar, making it as fun and reflective of their personality as they would like.

Seating: Once the avatar is ready, let them select a seat at the table. Feel free to choose any spot that feels comfortable to them.

Open Discussion: This is an Open Retrospective, which means that the participants get to bring topics that are important to them up for discussion.

What can the topics be:

  • It can be a recent challenge you faced

  • It can be regarding the way of working

  • Something that happened during the sprint

  • It can be regarding the review

  • You can talk about the Q4 initiatives or even Q1–2024 initiatives

  • You can talk about you

  • Share an observation

  • Is something bothering you?

  • Do you want to share a sprint achievement?

  • Is there anything you want to talk about with your team?

P.S: If you are using MIRO, use private mode to avoid participants being influenced with each others inputs

Sharing: Once everyone has shared their thoughts on the stickies. (Unlock the preview mode so you can read through all the stickies.) Then, allow them to share what topic(s) they brought to the table.

Voting: After all topics are shared, make them vote for the most important one. Each of the participant will have the opportunity to vote for the topic they believe is most critical for the team to discuss further.

P.S: Voting gives equal opportunity to every participant to select a topic.

Brainstorming and Action Items: The topic with the most votes will be selected for brainstorming. Together, the team needs to come up with action items to address the issues or opportunities associated with that topic.

By combining the structure of a Retrospective with the interactive elements inspired by virtual meeting platforms like Airmeet, the Round Table Retrospective provides a unique and engaging way for teams to collaborate. Create their avatars adds an engaging and interactive element to the Retrospective. It also fosters a sense of connection and collaboration among participants, similar to the experience I had with Airmeet.
