It is not always easy being a Scrum Master. One of the teams I have been working with has been struggling with frequent hostile situations. These moments of aggression, whether in tone, body language, or even passive behaviour, have created an unsafe environment. The team members are hesitant to speak up, and this has led to frustration, misunderstandings, and a breakdown in collaboration.
The biggest challenge I face is bringing this issue to the surface. It’s not easy to address hostility head-on, especially when team members may not even be fully aware of how their behaviour is impacting others. This lack of awareness can create a cycle where difficult topics are avoided, leading to more unresolved issues.
Aggression, whether verbal or non-verbal, can quickly create a toxic atmosphere in any team. Shouting, cursing, and dismissive body language send signals of disrespect and can make team members feel unsafe or unheard. When these behaviours are present, discussions around challenging topics become difficult to initiate. Team members may avoid bringing up issues out of fear that they will face hostility or aggressive responses. In the absence of constructive conversations, misunderstandings grow, and team dynamics suffer. To foster a healthy team environment, it’s crucial to address aggression and encourage open, respectful dialogue, ensuring everyone feels comfortable sharing their perspectives.
In situations where a single instance of hostile behaviour can spark a cascade of difficult conversations, it’s important to address the issue in a way that doesn’t escalate the tension. By introducing office comic strips, my goal is to highlight the core issue — hostile behaviour — while making it more approachable and less confrontational. The comic strips set clear expectations for the kind of communication we expect within the team, showcasing how to handle challenging situations with respect and empathy. This creative approach encourages team members to reflect on their actions without feeling singled out, and it promotes open dialogue on how to improve the team culture.
Using comic strips has allowed the team to address serious issues in a light-hearted yet impactful way. It breaks down barriers and opens the door to more honest conversations. The visual format makes it easier to see the problem from different perspectives, and team members are more likely to engage with the message. It encourages collective responsibility, where everyone is accountable for maintaining a respectful and supportive environment.
